Using Bar Magnets For Demonstrations

Bar magnets are the familiar horseshoe magnets that are commonly used in Science classes and demonstrations.

There are many uses for magnets in all walks of life and believe it or not you do use them in your home.

A bar magnet is the typical weak magnet that helps to teach students about North and South poles and demonstrates how to use a compass.

A common way that students learn about the use of magnets is to use a bar magnet to pick up steel filings or even paper clips.

Magnets Used at Home

Some common ways that magnets are used in home include:

  • Magnets that you use on the refrigerator to hold papers in place
  • Towel magnets that hold the paper towels in place in the kitchen
  • Magnetic jewellery such as bracelets and necklaces
  • Magnetic mattresses

How Magnets Help Relieve Pain

Both the North and South ends of a bar magnet have different effects on the body. The North magnetic surface of a magnet helps to have a calming effect on the body and helps to bring cells, tissues and organs back to a more normal balance. On the other hand, the South magnetic surface tends to have a negative effect on the body, often making the condition worse. Therefore special care has to be taken if you decide to use magnetic therapy on your own. If you use a bar magnet over a damaged part of the body, such as a injury that you know you have, you should be careful not to use the South end. In fact you should not use an ordinary bar magnet for this purpose at all.

The magnets used in magnetic therapy are specially designed ceramic bar magnets. These magnets are safe to use on your own because they have been designed for that purpose. They only use the North magnetic field for slowing, stopping and treating a wide variety of medical conditions. Some of these include:

  • Healing broken bones
  • Reducing swelling
  • Relieving the pain of arthritis
  • Helping with infections.
